Robinhood Gold Card Foreign Transaction Fee Explained: Net Rewards vs Gemini & Coinbase One (2026)
Sources: RH FAQ · Rates & Fees (Jul 1, 2026) · Gemini Rates PDF · Coinbase One CHA
Key findings
- Who pays: Opened before Jul 1, 2026 → $0 FTF. Opened on or after → 3% of USD amount on foreign-currency transactions (live FAQ).
- Net for new accounts: At brokerage redemption ($0.01/pt), $100 / $500 / $2,000 foreign-currency examples all net ≈ 0% after the fee.
- Peers still $0 FTF: Gemini Foreign Transaction = None; Coinbase One = $0 — category/tier rewards stay intact abroad (their rules apply).
- $50 Gold ≠ FTF: Annual Gold subscription is separate; card annual fee is None with Gold.
- Gotchas: DCC / paying in USD; crypto or foreign-currency purchases can be cash advances; waitlist “5X” travel portal conflicts with Rewards Rules (Sep 1, 2026) — Rules win.
Robinhood’s Gold Card marketed itself as a simple ~3% catch-all. That pitch still works for many domestic USD purchases — and for accounts opened before the July 2026 cutover. For newer accounts spending in foreign currency, the fee table and the Points math cancel each other. MoneyTraces already walked the cancel math in October 2026; this page focuses on dated primary sources plus crypto-cashback peer nets (Gemini and Coinbase One), where foreign transaction fees are still disclosed as $0.
1Quick answer: who pays the 3% FTF?
Per Robinhood’s live Gold Card FAQ (accessed Oct 26, 2026): accounts opened before July 1, 2026 have no foreign transaction fee; accounts opened on or after July 1, 2026 pay 3% of the U.S. dollar amount of each transaction made in a foreign currency.
| Account opened | Foreign transaction fee |
|---|---|
| Before July 1, 2026 | None (grandfathered) |
| On or after July 1, 2026 | 3% of USD amount (foreign currency) |

The fee was not always present. Doctor of Credit, Miles to Memories, and TheStreet/AOL reported a quiet Jul 1, 2026 change for new accounts. Robinhood’s marketing page (accessed Oct 26, 2026) highlights no annual fee, no authorized-user fee, and 3% cash back — it does not claim “no foreign transaction fees.”
2What the Robinhood Gold Card is (rewards ≠ Gold subscription)
The Robinhood Gold Visa® Card is issued by Coastal Community Bank and offered/serviced by Robinhood Credit, Inc. (Cardholder Agreement).
Earn rate and redemption
Per Rewards Rules (Last Updated Sep 1, 2026, on the Cardholder Agreement page):
- 3 Points per $1 Eligible Purchases (active annual Robinhood Gold membership required to earn).
- Redeemed to a Robinhood Financial Brokerage Account: $0.01 per point → effectively ~3% at the standard earn rate.
- Statement credit value is less than $0.01 per point (app shows details) — break-even math only holds on the brokerage-cash path.
Foreign-currency purchases can still earn Points if otherwise eligible; buying foreign currency itself is not an Eligible Purchase.
Fees that are not the FTF
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Card annual fee | None (with Gold) | Rates & Fees Updated Jul 1, 2026 |
| Robinhood Gold subscription | $50 / year | Required to earn Points; not the FTF (waitlist FAQ) |
| Purchase APR | 29.99% variable | Prime-based |
| Cash advance fee | Greater of $10 or 5% | Crypto / foreign-currency purchases can land here |
3Exact FTF language (primary sources)
The Rates & Fees table (Updated Jul 1, 2026) lists a foreign transaction fee of 3% of the U.S. dollar amount of each transaction made in a foreign currency.
The Cardholder Agreement adds that foreign-currency transactions are converted to USD at a rate selected by Visa from a wholesale range (or a government-mandated rate) for the central processing date, and gives examples such as online purchases from a merchant outside the U.S. when priced in foreign currency.
4The math: 3% fee vs ~3% cashback
Assumptions: post–Jul 1 account subject to FTF; Eligible Purchase in foreign currency; Points redeemed at $0.01 brokerage cash; Visa FX spread ignored; Gold $50/yr excluded.
New accounts (FTF applies) — brokerage redemption
| Foreign spend | Points (3×) | Brokerage $ | FTF 3% | Net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 300 | $3.00 | $3.00 | $0.00 (0%) |
| $500 | 1,500 | $15.00 | $15.00 | $0.00 (0%) |
| $2,000 | 6,000 | $60.00 | $60.00 | $0.00 (0%) |
Grandfathered accounts (opened before Jul 1, 2026)
Same spend, $0 FTF → ~3% net at brokerage redemption. Secondary coverage in July 2026 said existing holders were not impacted “for now” — treat permanence as unknown.
MoneyTraces published a similar “3% can erase 3%” walkthrough on Oct 1, 2026. This page’s job is the crypto-cashback peer net — what you keep on Gemini and Coinbase One when FTF is still $0.
5How Gemini and Coinbase One compare on foreign spend
Gemini Credit Card — Foreign Transaction = None
Gemini’s Rates & Fees PDF (2026-02-17) lists Foreign Transaction fee: None. Category rates matter for the net:
| $2,000 foreign-currency example | Approx. crypto rewards | FTF | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining @ 3% | $60 | $0 | ~$60 (3%) |
| Other @ 1% | $20 | $0 | ~$20 (1%) |
Coinbase One Card — Foreign Transaction = $0
Coinbase One’s Cardholder Agreement (Effective May 11, 2026) discloses Foreign Transaction fee $0. Rewards Terms (Last Updated Oct 14, 2026) pay Bitcoin back by Assets on Coinbase: 2.0% / 2.5% / 3.0% / 4.0%, with higher tiers capped at the first $10,000/calendar month Eligible Purchases then 2.0%; Travel Portal earns 5% BTC in lieu of standard (no that monthly cap).
| $2,000 example (within monthly higher-tier cap) | Approx. BTC value at credit | FTF | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 @ 2% | $40 | $0 | ~$40 |
| Mid-tier @ 3% | $60 | $0 | ~$60 |
| Top tier @ 4% | $80 | $0 | ~$80 |
| Travel Portal @ 5% | $100 | $0 | ~$100 |
Coinbase’s CHA defines a “foreign transaction” more broadly (non-USD or USD processed outside the U.S.) — but the disclosed fee is still $0.

6Gotchas that change the math
- DCC / paying in USD abroad. Choosing USD at a foreign terminal may avoid Robinhood’s foreign-currency fee but can embed a worse merchant FX rate. Prefer local currency + a $0-FTF card when the merchant rate looks padded.
- Crypto or foreign-currency purchase on the card. Robinhood treats purchasing cryptocurrency, foreign currency, wires, money orders, precious metals, many P2P/gambling flows, etc. as Cash Advances (fee + interest; no purchase grace period).
- $50 Gold ≠ FTF. Subscription cost is annual overhead, not a per-trip foreign fee.
- Travel portal points. The waitlist page still markets 5X via the Robinhood travel portal; Rewards Rules (Sep 1, 2026) say Travel Portal purchases are no longer eligible for extra Points (standard 3 Points/$1 if eligible). Prefer the Rules.
- Blocked countries. FAQ lists countries where the card may not work — check the live list before travel.
- Visa FX spread ≠ the 3% fee. Network conversion can differ from cash mid-market even when FTF is $0.
- “For now” on legacy accounts. Coverage quoted Robinhood that existing holders were not impacted for now. Watch Change of Terms notices.

7Who should still use Robinhood Gold abroad?
- Grandfathered (opened before Jul 1, 2026): Still a clean ~3% brokerage-cash catch-all abroad if you redeem that way and avoid cash-advance categories.
- Mostly domestic USD spend: FTF may rarely matter; weigh Gold $50/yr and APR against peers.
- New accounts with heavy foreign-currency travel: Net ≈ 0% at brokerage redeem after FTF — compare Gemini (category-dependent, $0 FTF) and Coinbase One (tier-dependent BTC, $0 FTF). See our best crypto cashback cards roundup and Gemini Business Card review if you need a business path.
