The Gemini Credit Card pays crypto rewards in four tiers. According to Gemini, you earn 4% on gas, EV charging, transit and rideshare, 3% on dining, 2% on groceries and 1% on everything else. Which tier a purchase lands in depends on how the merchant is coded, not on what you buy. This guide explains the rates, the monthly 4% cap, how merchant codes work, and what cardholders report for common stores.

The Gemini Credit Card rewards rates

| Rate | Category (per Gemini) |
|---|---|
| 4% | Gas at the pump, EV charging, transit, taxis and rideshare (monthly cap applies) |
| 3% | Dining: restaurants, bars and fast food |
| 2% | Groceries: traditional grocery and specialty food stores |
| 1% | All other eligible purchases |
Source: Gemini support: rewards tiers and the Gemini Credit Card page. Gemini added transit, taxis and rideshare to the 4% tier in May 2025 (Gemini blog).
The monthly cap on 4%
Gemini’s support page describes a cap on the 4% tier: the bonus applies to the first $300 of combined spend each month across gas, EV charging, transit, taxis and rideshare. After that, those purchases earn 1% for the rest of the month (Gemini support). Caps and categories can change, so check the current terms in the app.
Simple math: $300 × 4% = $12, the most you can earn at 4% in a month under the current cap. Dining, groceries and everything else share no such bucket, and Gemini doesn’t list a cap for them.
Some older articles and forum posts mention a lower cap. Those reflect earlier terms.
How merchant category codes decide your rate
Every merchant that takes cards has a Merchant Category Code (MCC), assigned by its payment processor. Gemini’s support page explains that if a merchant isn’t coded in a supported category, the purchase earns 1% even if it seems to belong in a higher tier (Gemini support).
- A supermarket coded as a grocery store typically earns 2%. A big-box store selling the same items may be coded as general merchandise and earn 1%.
- A gas pump and the register inside the same station can carry different codes.
- The same brand can be coded differently by location, and codes can change over time.
Gemini’s rewards terms also list purchases that earn no rewards, such as gift cards, cash equivalents, cash advances and fees, and note that Gemini determines which transactions qualify.
Common merchants: official rules vs. what cardholders report

The “cardholders report” column comes from a small number of public forum posts. These reports are self-reported and unverified, so treat them as hints, not rules, and check how your own purchase posts in the app.
| Merchant or type | What official rules say | What cardholders report |
|---|---|---|
| Gas at the pump | 4% (up to the monthly cap) | Several cardholders report 4% at the pump; rewards may appear after the charge settles |
| Gas paid inside the station or at the register | Not eligible for 4% | Cardholders report these purchases often post as a convenience store at 1% |
| Traditional supermarkets | 2% | Typically 2%, but coding varies by store; check your app |
| Walmart | Excluded from 2% groceries | Recent cardholder reports say 1%; some older posts said 2% |
| Costco (U.S. warehouse and gas) | Excluded from 2% groceries | U.S. Costco locations accept Visa credit, not Mastercard, per Costco; Costco.com accepts Mastercard |
| Sam’s Club in-store | Excluded from 2% groceries | Typically 1% |
| Sam’s Club gas | Not specifically listed | A few reports, including a Gemini representative’s forum comment, suggest pump purchases can earn 4%; check your app |
| Uber, Lyft and other rideshare | 4% (up to the monthly cap) | Cardholders report rides may show the bonus after posting |
| Public transit (subway, bus, fare reloads) | 4% (up to the monthly cap) | A handful of cardholders report 4% on transit fares; coding can vary by agency |
| Restaurants, bars, fast food | 3% | Typically 3%; a few cardholders report individual restaurants posting at 1% |
| Food delivery apps | May not be coded as restaurants | Not enough recent reports yet; check how your order posts |
| Parking, specific EV charging networks, Target, Whole Foods | See official categories | Not enough reports yet |
Why did a purchase earn only 1%?
- The merchant’s code isn’t in a bonus category. This is the most common reason, according to Gemini’s FAQ.
- You paid inside the gas station instead of at the pump.
- You passed the monthly 4% cap. All 4% categories share one bucket.
- The reward hasn’t fully posted. Gemini says rewards for some merchant types, such as gas stations and online merchants, arrive when the charge posts (Gemini support).
- It’s an excluded store or purchase type, such as a warehouse club or a gift card.
If you think a reward is wrong, the rewards terms describe how to raise it with Gemini support.
FAQ
Does Costco earn 4% on gas with the Gemini card?
Typically no. U.S. Costco warehouses and gas stations accept Visa credit cards, and the Gemini card is a Mastercard, according to Costco’s payment page. Gemini lists Costco among stores excluded from 2% groceries.
Do Walmart and Target count as groceries?
Gemini says these stores are typically not coded as grocery stores. Recent cardholder reports for Walmart say 1%. Check your app for how a purchase posted.
Do Uber Eats and DoorDash count as dining?
Not reliably. Gemini says delivery services may not be coded as restaurants, and there aren’t enough recent reports yet to say more.
Is the 4% unlimited?
No. Under the current terms it covers the first $300 of combined 4%-category spending each month, then 1%. Check the app for current terms.
Where can I see how a purchase was categorized?
Open the transaction in the Gemini app and look at its details. Cardholders report seeing the merchant’s category and the reward earned.
